Race Day

so….

I really thought I prepared well for this race. I trained hard and I ate a big pasta dinner the night before. My head and heart told me that I was going to be ready to run a really good race. The weather was perfect, clear skies, a gentle breeze and not too hot or cold.

I was able to meet up with a couple people who were also running the race, the type of people who are super athletic and relatively indifferent to physical pain. I am not one of those people. I push through the pain as much as possible, but I can’t push myself to the point of passing out. It’s actually remarkable how many people are on the road during the race- either in pain or passed out. I saw one woman go off the road and fall down to jab a needle into her thigh. People are crazy.

The first five miles are generally really easy for me on long runs. No so much on race day, I was really tired and short of breath already- this made me really frustrated. I was really committed to running the whole race without walking, but once I neared mile 10 I started to cramp up so I needed to take a break to stretch and keep going. I was disappointed with my final time at 2 hours 19 minutes. Oh well, I am still really proud that I was able to complete the race. It is a lot more difficult than it seems, even though I think it is really hard to run 15.5 miles. As of right now, I dont see myself running another 25K, but I may change my mind. I will keep running- probably only around 6-8 miles at the most at a time.
